Startup funding: Sell the vision, not the product
How to use the power of brand to attract the right funding and talent

In the dynamic landscape of the startup ecosystem, sustainable technology companies aiming for Series A funding find themselves navigating a challenging and competitive terrain. Beyond groundbreaking innovations and robust financial models, these startups increasingly recognise the pivotal role of effective branding in not only attracting investment but also fostering long-term success.
In this article, we’ll explore the significance of strategic branding for sustainable tech startups and how it can be a key driver in securing Series A funding.
A brand is more than just a logo and colours; it’s what people say about you when you’re not in the room. It encompasses your product’s purpose, your reason to exist, your ambition, attributes, behaviour, and presentation. A strong brand not only communicates capabilities but forges a deep connection with stakeholders.
As Simon Sinek famously pointed out, “people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” However, in the realm of VC, the focus shifts to what you may achieve. This raises the question: How can you convincingly showcase the impact of your innovation, making a lasting impression on potential backers?
While Series A funding is a crucial milestone, the journey doesn’t end there. Startups must position themselves for long-term success, which requires building a brand around a product that resonates with various stakeholders, including customers, employees, and the broader community.
The power of effective branding
An effective brand strategy not only attracts investors but also creates a foundation for customer loyalty and employee engagement. As startups grow, having a strong and recognisable brand becomes a valuable asset in recruiting top talent, forming strategic partnerships, and expanding market share. The brand becomes a guiding force, aligning internal and external perceptions with the company’s core values.
Effective branding can elevate your business in multiple ways:
- Increases business valuation
- Engages the right investors
- Attracts and retain top-tier talent
- Builds customer loyalty
Establishing a Compelling Narrative
At the heart of effective branding lies the ability to tell a compelling story. Sustainable tech startups often operate with a strong sense of purpose, aiming to address pressing global challenges such as environmental degradation, social or economic inequalities, and of course climate change. There’s a reason your product exists and why people should care about it. Crafting a narrative that communicates this purpose is crucial in capturing the attention and interest of potential investors.
You are offering more than a product. You are projecting a vision.
Investors, especially in the Series A stage, seek alignment not only with a business model but also with a broader mission and vision. A brand narrative that clearly articulates your commitment to sustainability and its contribution to positive change creates an emotional connection. This connection can set a startup apart from others and resonate with investors who are increasingly looking for opportunities to make a meaningful impact through their investments. Wrap this up in a professionally executed visual identity and you have a winning formula.

Simplifying complexity
We’ve been working with startups of all kinds for the last two decades. We’ve seen it all – the good, the bad, and the ugly. We’ve also worked directly with VCs (also the good, the bad, and the ugly…) offering us valuable insights into their motivations and analytical processes. Deciphering an analyst’s psyche may not be rocket science (even if what you do is!). And it turns out that, conveniently, their needs align closely with those of both your external and internal audiences.
What is obvious is that complication doesn’t sell well. It fails to convey the qualities of a well organised, professional, and visionary team capable of transforming an MVP into a category-defining branded product or service. So, since then, we have developed tried and tested methodologies that help turn complex subject matter into easily relatable situations and stories that an audience can easily absorb.
Effective communication operates on a layered principle—we refer to it as ‘the holy trinity’: attract, engage, convert. In the realm of startup branding, the initial step is to capture attention (attract) by presenting a compelling proposition. What unique value does your product offer, and why should it matter to anyone? Following that, the focus shifts to informing (engage) through a persuasive argument and solution, deepening the viewer’s understanding and forging a crucial connection between your future and theirs. The final step is to persuade (convert). Once they align with the value, vision, and credibility of the opportunity you present, you’ve achieved a critical state of alignment.
Einstein said ‘Information is not knowledge’, this much seems obvious, but he also said ‘Imagination is everything’. And that’s what you need to ignite – the audiences imagination as to where this could go. And to do that you need to sell the vision, not the product.
Insight leads to impact
Our work for Better Origin proves the point. Originally called ‘Entomics’ (latin for the study of insects), this startup from Cambridge University was generating protein from black soldier flies in a mobile, carbon-negative operation. The environmental benefits of their highly scalable approach are substantial, offering significant potential returns for the right investors.
However, their offering was intricate, even for a well-informed audience comprised of educated, visually aware, and ambitious investors who balance insight and intuition. It was difficult to see through the technical monologue. Even if you could decipher their tech stack and process, it was impossible to adequately distinguish them from their competitors (of which there are several noteworthy contenders).
We recognised that their actual impact was addressing the food chain, creating essential food products from a, well, better origin. With this shift in focus, we developed a clear and ambitious narrative, clean, concise data modelling and graphic and messaging systems helping secure their first, second and third successful series A funding rounds – $28m to date. Pretty decent ROI considering the brand exercise only cost $30k.
‘No one remembers charts and graphs but everyone remembers a good story.’

Up to 90% of startups fail within the first three years*. While factors, such as product-market fit, execution, market dynamics, competition, financial management, and leadership all play significant roles, a lack of market traction can often be attributed to bad funding, overly complex narratives and poorly executed communications.
Building Trust and Credibility
Effective branding builds trust, an essential component in the investor-founder relationship. Sustainable tech startups, often dealing with cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions, need to assure investors of the viability and credibility of their ventures. A well-crafted brand strategy reinforces the startup’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical business practices. From a visually appealing logo to a consistent and coherent brand message across various touchpoints, each element contributes to the overall perception of trustworthiness.
Clear communication not only builds credibility but also establishes a foundation for a lasting and fruitful partnership with investors.
Attracting Like-minded Investors
Series A investors are not just looking for financial returns; they are seeking partnerships with companies that align with their values and vision for the future. Effective branding acts as a beacon, attracting investors who share an alignment in values and ambition.
By incorporating elements of social and environmental impact into the brand story, startups can create a magnetic effect on investors who want their portfolios to reflect not only financial success but also positive contributions to society. This shared sense of purpose not only increases the likelihood of securing Series A funding but also sets the stage for long-term collaboration and shared success.
Enhancing Perceived Value
In the highly competitive startup ecosystem, perceived value plays a crucial role in investment decisions. Effective branding goes beyond aesthetics; it communicates the unique value proposition of a sustainable tech startup. This involves highlighting technological innovations, competitive advantages, and the potential for market disruption.
Investors are not just looking for the next big thing; they want to invest in ventures that have a clear understanding of their market and a solid plan for scalability. A well-defined brand strategy that communicates the startup’s value proposition can significantly enhance its perceived value in the eyes of investors, making it a more attractive investment opportunity.
Conclusion
Effective branding is not just a marketing tool but a strategic imperative. It is the bridge that connects a startup’s innovative solutions with the investors who believe in its mission. By weaving a compelling narrative, building trust, attracting like-minded investors, enhancing perceived value, and securing long-term success, branding becomes a driving force in propelling sustainable tech startups toward their funding goals and beyond. In a world where purpose-driven business is gaining prominence, the power of purposeful branding cannot be overstated.
